Yet another dead end.[break][break]
He hated going to these shady looking places, crawling with all sorts of ruffians and other bad-hearted people looking to make a quick buck. But he knows he’s not everybody is like that. Maybe they're also here for the same reasons. Though he had no time to dwell on what-ifs. He just wants to find the friend that was wrongfully taken away from him. But again, no luck to the search that’s been spanning years and years. Optimistic as he is, Toshiaki was starting to lose hope. And it shows.[break][break]
He needed to get away from there. Even after he leaves the illegal fighting-ring, the sounds of Pokemon brawling against their wills echo loudly in his ears. He cringes in remembrance, while the Togetic in his lap trilling sadly, feeling every bit of it’s trainer's inner turmoil within. Mauville city was calm and tranquil at night, nothing like that place, but it wasn’t enough to quell the negative feelings rooting deep in his heart.[break][break]
“I need to move, walk, or somethin..” Sighing, he stands up from the bench, planning to go on his merry way elsewhere. Or well, so he attempts to before he bumps into the back of somebody else. [break][break]
A ranger more specifically. Shit. Did he see him come over from Slateport?[break][break]
Faking expressions wasn’t a strong suit of his, he clearly looked panicked. He hugs onto Togetic tighter, smiling nervously up at the man of important authority. “Whoops. Uh, sorry! Didn’t mean to bump into ya there.”[break][break]
Then, Toshiaki gets a closer look at his face. Why did he-[break][break]
He frowns, looking at the older man quizzically. “Sorry, but.. do I know you?”[break][break]

Warren had been sent out for an investigation. However, he already knew this place. An illegal Pokemon fighting arena, where people came to spectate and cheer on the brutality set upon poor Pokemon that didn't ask for the life they were forced into.

He'd been here many times, as part of a meeting place with Rocket allies when he had been in their ranks. It was a good place to talk business, since people paid them no mind as their attention was engulfed in the battles.

It was disgusting. He hated it there, even though his expression had always been hard to read. Those who had really known him knew his distaste for the people there, drunkenly screaming for more and throwing money they didn't have at bets that weren't worth it. But who was he to judge?

He refused to set foot in there, though he did make an appearance just outside the area to ensure that the location was still there. With a gruff grunt, Warren gathered his things to leave, until someone bumped into him. He expected a drunkard coming from the arena.

What he was met with was a boy.

One with familiar hair, eyes, a face that reminded him of a family he had left long ago. A name he threw away as he joined the ranks of team Rocket. Surely it couldn't be him?

Until he asked him, "do I know you?"

"..."

Warren stared at him, his face unreadable as he thought over what to do. What to say. He hadn't seen Toshiaki in years, not since he was small. Hell, when Toshi was born, Warren was only 12. Joining Rocket when the kid was 4 or so meant he probably wasn't remembered well at all.

"You knew me. When you were little. But you don't anymore," Warren said, his words rather cryptic instead of straight forward.

Out of all the outcomes he anticipated for the evening Toshiaki hadn’t seen this coming at all. Not that he was born with any kind of insane foresight, but this was enough to knock anyone off their groove, and his rhythm’s definitely all fuddled now. The man’s cryptic words confused him even more. [break][break]
Toshiaki is known for his naivety, but was he ignorant enough to believe a far-fetched claim like this? Realistically, this guy could just be messing with him, taking advantage of this vague feeling of nostalgia coursing madly through his brain. [break][break]
However, the more Toshiaki looks at him, he can recall things he normally didn’t remember. A relative; Somewhere in-between a boy and a teen, but neither. His memories of him aren’t kind or negative, simply neutral. Still, something clicks, and it’s anything but positive as he takes a few clumsy steps backward.[break][break]
“Hey- You aren’t here to take me back, are you?” His whole face blanches white. For someone who looks so strong and tall, he was anything but in that moment. Togetic squirms in his arms, worried trills echoing between the pair.[break][break]
“No! I won’t go back with him!” Like the old pillars erect in Ancient sinnoh, he crumbles, withers away with each passing second at the thought of that cursed family— that man. [break][break]
Every part inside him screams. He wants to run, get away as far as possible but his legs refuse to budge an inch. [break][break]
Like a setting sun gold hues fade from view, eyes squeezed shut. Calm down.. breathe. [break][break]
“I’m sorry. You’re right. I do sort of remember, but I don’t know you anymore.” He trembles. “Just please, don’t make me go back there — to my d-dad. ”[break][break]

Warren could feel the desperation and near panic in the kid's voice when he begged him not to take him back. The "him" he said, he could only assume was a relative, perhaps.

His father?

Warren never liked him. He was always a dickwad.

And his suspicion was confirmed.

"Please. I'd never subject anyone else to your father. I hate seeing him as much as you do, apparently," Warren said with a scoff, glancing off to the side.

So, Toshiaki didn't remember him. He wasn't surprised. And, given that he was afraid of his father, well... he might as well step in and help him out in some way.

That's what family did, right?

But did Warren know a thing about family anymore? He had long stepped away from family to join Rocket, and now that he was out of their grasp... would they accept him again?

"My name is Warren. It used to be too difficult for you to say as a child. You'd call me Uncle Ren, when you were little. I'm your uncle."

His attention was back on Toshiaki, his arms crossed as he waited for questions or an explanation.

His uncle was a lot more stoic and rough around the edges than he remembers, though he was just a little toddler back then. Quietly, Toshiaki questions what he’s been through in his head. Begins to piece together why all the pictures frames of him back at home were placed face down, the solemn expression on his mother’s face whenever a mention of him was whispered across the room. [break][break]
He was old enough to know now he believes, but he’ll save that for another time. [break][break]
“Uncle Ren.. Uncle Ren..” He mumbles it a few times to himself. Then he pauses in recollection, looking up at the older man with a sparkle in his eyes. [break][break]
“Wait I think.. I used to tug your hair a lot? Didn’t I? Yeah! I did!” He laughs slightly, before nuzzling his chin atop his Togetic’s head. “S-Sorry about that.”[break][break]
This.. is a lot to process. His head hurts, and his stomach grumbles something fierce. He forgot to eat before going to see that horrid match. A purposeful decision, because no one should watch that on a full stomach. [break][break]
He shuffles his shoes in the dirt. An old habit from childhood. “Hey, Uncle Ren? Maybe.. we could go somewhere and talk? Like a diner?” Something’s bound to be still open. Or if not, talking outside on a bench was better than just standing out in the open.[break][break]

It all seemed to begin to click into place for Toshiaki, like he was remembering things that were bogged down or suppressed by time. How he could remember it, he was amazed, because even he had forgotten some of the details he had mentioned.

"Yeah. Little shit. You would pull on it all the time, no matter how I put it up."

Even though his words sounded cross, Warren couldn't hide the smirk on his face. He couldn't blame the kid. He'd pull his mom's hair too, when he was a baby. That's what he got for keeping it long.

"Don't sweat it. You were a baby. Not like you can control that."

As if on cue, Toshi's stomach grumbled and interrupted their conversation. Warren jerked his head, indicating they should go away from the fighting ring.

"C'mon. My treat."

Most of his childhood memories were unfortunately repressed. Unable to express himself the way he instinctively craved, forced into roles much too complicated for any young child to grasp, let alone someone as “eccentric” as himself. Still, Toshiaki had a loving family with his mother, and to an extent his grandparents. Although, he still wishes that they wouldn't look at him with such guilt and regret in their eyes.. [break][break]
However, just a few minutes with his uncle made him forget all that complicated stuff. Right now, he was simply just a nephew hanging out with his long lost uncle, and that thought alone is enough to make him ecstatic inside.[break][break]
“Yeah, okay.” He agrees, unable to contain the smile that paints across his face. “That sounds nice. Thank you.”[break][break]
On that note Toshiaki follows his uncle to wherever he had in mind. [break][break]

Warren didn't know how much of a role he'd be able to play in this kid's life. Did Toshiaki know? About him leaving behind his family name and joining team Rocket?

He wondered what sort of information his father had fed him as a child about dear Uncle Ren.

Deciding not to let that bother him right now, he took him to a local diner he enjoyed with his Pokemon. His Torracat was a huge fan of their food.

"What are your plans now, kid? Are you doing anything exciting?"

Once inside the diner Toshiaki feels the tension held tightly in his shoulders begin to loosen. Strange as it is, places like this were those of comfort. When his mother took him away from Johto, she would take him out into more public settings. His favorites just happen to be those that serve good food. [break][break]
Togetic settles into the booth seat with his trainer, reaching for a menu with it’s tiny little arms, which makes Toshiaki laugh.[break][break]
Before he can begin to pick foods that’ll break poor Uncle Ren’s wallet, he smiles over at him. [break][break]
“Well.. Mum took me back to Galar after the divorce. I didn’t think I’d ever go back to Johto, but when I did.. I was gaining lots of traction in the beginner’s athlete division there! I have Pokéathlon medals I can show you sometime. But —” [break][break]
Despite still smiling, the light fades from his eyes.[break][break]
“... I had to stop because I was being um, bothered.” His father to be exact, but he’s sure he can fill in the blanks. “I still train here and there to keep in shape! But I've been doing the league challenge here. I even got a badge!” [break][break]
He looks down at the menu. Spaghetti looks good. Or waffles! Maybe both..[break][break]
“What about you? I wanna learn all about you!”[break][break]

"Athlete division? Were you good?"

The question came out of no where. Perhaps, if Warren had lived life like a normal kid, instead of joining the ranks of team Rocket, he'd have done the same as Toshiaki. Done athletics, competed, won.

"I'd like to see your medals some time," he said, a genuine statement.

However, his pleased expression seemed to fade a bit. Bothered. So, was his douchebag of a father still around? Warren thought to himself, could he handle the situation? Take him out, give Toshiaki some peace of mind-

"You don't do that anymore. You're in the League. Murder is frowned upon."

Warren reached for a cup of water, drinking from it as if it would wash away the thought. However, he continued to listen as his nephew chirped on.

"A badge, huh? That's one more than me."

Then the conversation turned to Warren.

"Well... what do you want to know? I wouldn't say I'm all that interesting."

Not that his mother wasn’t proud of him (quite the opposite in fact, she boasts about Toshi being her pride and joy) but — it felt different to have a male figure in his life actually care about his achievements. It had been something he lost all hope in having, and yet, didn’t know he needed in the end after all.[break][break]
Toshiaki smiles warmly at his uncle taking interest in him, deeply touched by such simple acts of kindness. “Okay. I’ll show them to you sometime.”[break][break]
Then his smile blossoms to a full-blown grin as he places down the menu, eager to know more. “I dunno, anything you wanna tell me! Do you have any cool Pokemon? Have you ever gone on a journey?” He slowly pulls the menu back up, curiosity burning in his gold eyes, unable to hide his impish grin. “Are you any good with the ladies?” [break][break]

"I look forward to it, kid."

The waitress came back, ready to take their order. For Warren, it was a BLT with a side salad. Sure, it wasn't exactly the healthiest option, but he balanced his meals accordingly.

What did he want to tell Toshiaki? That was hard for Warren to decide as he handed over the menu to the waitress. He crossed his hands in front of him, elbows on the table as he leaned into his stance.

"My current team is my AEGISLASH, TORRACAT, and MACHOP. I occasionally go out to find new members, but I haven't in a while. As for a journey... I suppose I have."

His life had been one hell of a journey, that was for sure.

"I journeyed across Johto, obviously. You know some about that. But, I've been to Kanto. And here I am in Hoenn," he answered, though pretty vague in response.

Though, Toshi's last question made him chuckle.

"The ladies... I'm probably alright whenever I have the desire to be."

Like a little kid he hangs onto every word, eager to learn more about the intriguing man before him. In between their conversation Toshiaki settles on his order. Some grilled cheese and tomato soup would suffice and not the wacky waffle-spaghetti combo he originally wanted, (thank arceus above.)[break][break]
“Lets’ see.. girls like me a lot! I think? That or they’re just really friendly!” Oh, Toshiaki you sweet summer child, never change. [break][break]
“But your team’s really cool! Especially Torracat. I’ve been collecting a lot of Pokemon here.” He grins, patting his cute little Togetic on the head. “Being a trainer is something I always wanted to pursue. I got a little taste of that when mum moved us back to Galar. She wanted me to be a normal kid, go on a journey and all that, y’know?”[break][break]
His smile softens, though his shoulders slump. “Dad, though, he.. he didn’t want any of that for me. He wanted me to do what he wanted to do. And when I didn’t?” [break][break]
He brings his hand up to his bangs, revealing a gash-like scar right above the brow, otherwise hidden well. [break][break]
“... I got this years ago, after I punched him for selling my pet Yamper behind my back. Then mum took me and left.” His bangs settle back into place as he sighs. Why he’s telling his uncle all of this, he doesn’t have a clue. Maybe because he’s kept inside for too long. Who knows. [break][break]
“That’s why I was hanging around that shady place. I’m still looking for her.”[break][break]

Warren listened, not dropping his nephew's gaze even as he seemed to say the most innocent of things. He seemed oblivious to the aches and pains to the world, or at least some of them.

He wished that aspect of him wouldn't change.

"You like my team?"

His golden gaze flicked to his TORRACAT, mentioned by Toshi. It sat proudly, seemingly pleased by the compliment as it licked at a bowl of water that had been placed in front of him.

"They've stuck by me for a while. Especially AEGISLASH. I don't know what I would do without them."

Toshi should his scar, told him about his YAMPER, and how he left with his mother. It made sense. He didn't know that they had left, since he had joined the ranks of Rocket at that time. He thought for a moment.

"I can help you find her. Your YAMPER. I was trained in gathering intelligence for a short period of time. I'm sure I can help gather some leads."
